Firstly, thanks for your interest in becoming a Bus Operator with NZ Bus. In Wellington, our depots are based in Kilbirnie and operate the Go Wellington brand and out in Lower Hutt & Upper Hutt operating the Valley Flyer brand.

Being a Bus Operator is a more rewarding and fulfilling career than most. Bus Operators have important roles in our business - once you leave the depot, you are in sole charge of your day and the bus. You also become the day-to-day face of NZ Bus in our communities. As you are interacting with people all day every day, you can be social, helpful and understanding. Every moment of every day is an opportunity for you to make a positive difference. Becoming a Bus Operator also gives you the opportunity to develop professionally. The training we provide will, once you are fully qualified, give you the opportunity to progress to a nationally recognised qualification.
Our Bus Operator's are everyday people. They enjoy working with our customers and, at the end of the day, take pride knowing they have done a great job. Oh, and of course, they need to love driving. To begin with, there are two things you will need to have.
Held a full class 1 NZ drivers licence for at least two years. (If you do not have a NZ drivers licence, you will need to gain a full Class 1 NZ licence then apply for an exemption. You can only apply for an exemption if you have held an overseas licence for at least 2 years.)Eligibility to work in NZ for a period of 12 months or longer (unless you already hold your bus drivers licence from overseas).
